| Bonjour!
Here at St Margaret Ward School we celebrated the European
Day of Languages on Friday 26 October 2008. All the
children enjoyed a variety of activities, from learning to greet people
in French, Spanish and German, through to working with flags and language
role plays. Au revoir! |

We were fortunate to have Mademoiselle Ritsch, a French language assistant,
work with the children throughout 2007-08 and she was kept busy teaching
French vocabulary through songs, books, games and finger rhymes. The children
learned how to count and write some numbers in French; Class 2 drew a
monster to learn body parts and colours; Class 3 and Class 4 made wonderful
Christmas cards for their families, all in French. Mademoiselle Ritsch also taught the children more about French culture through powerpoint presentations and showing them what France looks like. The aim was to encourage the children to learn French in a fun and stimulating way and they certainly seemed to really enjoy their lessons. |

During the Spring
Term, Class 2 listened and did actions along to a French song about a
rabbit hiding from a farmer under a cabbage - they then learned the names
of animals, different vegetables and locations such as garden, house etc. The children then wrote a sentence in French and drew their own illustration of the story - these are just a few of their fantastic drawings. |

As
part of the 2007 International Week(from 24 September), our children
learned about capital cities, completed quizzes and word searches about
different countries and then made flags and bunting in preparation for
our International Food Festival
Evening. They also looked at the different natural landscapes in the countries we were representing at the festival and some children drew lovely palm trees, beaches, blue skies and sunsets, which are very different to our British beaches. |

| All
the activities are aimed at developing language skills but also awareness
of different cultures and cross-curricular activities related to Geography
and Citizenship. Children also learn to look at patterns, similarities
and differences with the English language, with a direct impact on Literacy
skills. |
| In January 2007, our friends at 'Ecole Montgazon' sent our Year 4 and 5 children a wonderful collection of letters, cards and artistic portraits and our Class 4 are now busy writing replies to their new French penpals. |
